It was the last day of the semester at school. A man walked passed his son’s bedroom at home, and noticed that it was unusually clean; even the bed had been made. It looked as if his son had packed up all his belongings and gone away. The father’s suspicions strengthened when he noticed a letter on the otherwise empty table. The words ’To dad’ were written on the envelope, and the man immediately recognised his son’s handwriting. His hands shook as he opened the envelope, but he made an attempt to calm himself and started reading:
’Dear Dad,
I’m letting you know what’s happened through this letter, as I knew that you and mom would raise a stink. I wanted to let you know that I have had to leave home to be with my new girlfriend. I love her very much. But I knew that you wouldn’t approve of our relationship because of her piercings, her tattoos, her biker clothing and the fact that she is considerably older than me. But this isn’t just about my feelings. The other thing is that she’s pregnant.
Her name is Sarah. She’s convinced that we’ll be happy together, and I believe her. After all, she has a trailer in the forest and a big store of firewood that will help us to survive the whole winter. We dream of having many children together. Sarah also explained to me that marijuana isn’t actually bad for your health. So we’re planning to grow it, both for ourselves and in order to sell it to other people. This little business will help us to earn the money we need for cocaine, which is also harmless if taken in moderate doses. Meanwhile, we’ll be praying that one day the cure for AIDS will be found. Sarah needs to get better, she deserves it so much!
Don’t worry, Dad. I’m already 15; I know how to take care of myself. Someday we’ll visit you so you can get acquainted with your grandchildren.
Love, your son Joshua
P.S. Dad, I made all of that up. I’m at Jason’s. I just wanted to remind you that there are much more terrible things that could happen than getting bad marks on my report card (which is on the kitchen table). Call me and let me know when I can come home! Love you!’
