Our body is made up of organic molecules but it is not able to produce all the organic and inorganic nutrients necessary for us. These nutrients include carbohydrates, lipids, protein, water, vitamins and minerals. We all have known about vitamins and its importance but giving a glance on minerals take us to a whole new world of health and its benefits.

Minerals are  inorganic molecules equally important for kids, adults and geriatrics. It helps the body grow, maintain proper functions and keep you stay active and healthy. They are found in various quantities in fruits, vegetables, nuts, dairy products, meat etc and, in non-living things like soil, rock water etc. Well, the food we eat takes up these minerals from its non-living source that goes ultimately into our body,

Minerals take part to maintain strong bones, teeth, skin, hair, blood components, muscles and metabolic functions as well. Wow! This means that they are needed by almost every part of the body.

These minerals include those elements that you have already heard including  Calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, zinc, iron, iodine, copper etc. But, how it affects the body and missing them would develops into deficiencies is rarely a centre of attention.

FDA (Food Drug Administration) has set Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) for all these minerals as per their need by the body.

As a matter of fact, our body is in continuous process of sweating. We sweat and, we lose some important minerals in form of electrolytes and our body become dehydrated, unable to take or do more task.

However, we often heard about drinking water but wonder why everyone forces to drink? It has enough amount of minerals like calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonates, sulfate, fluoride and chloride. It is one of the easiest way to fulfil body’s need for essential minerals and promote healthy growth and proper functioning.

When we take in these minerals our cells gets its fuel and they start its processes. Some of these important minerals and why we should not miss out are

Calcium, helps in regulating blood pressure, development of bones and teeth, heart rate, hormone secretion and muscle contractions.

Iron is the most important for red blood cells production, growth and development, helps in wound healing. Its deficiency may lead to anaemia.

Both of these minerals are of concern specially in young children and pregnant women.

Similarly, potassium which is a nutrient of concern for many individual and most Americans, helps in muscle and nerve function, heart function and protein formation.

Too little or too much will not be beneficial and leads to abnormal conditions.

Thus, many of these micronutrients present in nature helps the body to perform its regular tasks if taken in required quantities. The takeaway note is not to skip meals, take small portions of nuts, fruits and healthy food rich in minerals. While those who are on diet should also focus on the diet chart in order to meet minerals requirement as the essential need of the body.
