The risk of death from coronavirus is around 80% higher if you have this one underlying health disorder:

According to the latest study, it claims that a person’s risk of dying from coronavirus increases by 80% if you have one of the underlying health disorders. For people who have more than one underlying health disorder, the chances of admitting in the intensive care unit are more as the experts have already warned repeatedly.

RESEARCH AND STUDIES ON PATIENTS WITH UNDERLYING HEALTH DISORDER:

The researchers from China Medical Treatment Expert Group especially for COVID-19 started analyzing the data from the 1600 patients admitted in hospital. It was seen that around 20% patients were admitted to ICU who had underlying health disorder. It was seen that these patients either needed ventilation or they died ultimately in comparison to 5% healthy people. Scientists and researchers have identified that people who had underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or cancer were at the highest risk to suffer from coronavirus. According to a study where 1.2 million people in the UK suffered from COPD- a lung disorder was moved within ICU, they required ventilation or they eventually died due to coronavirus. When compared to the people with underlying diabetes, high blood pressure or any cardiovascular disease, it was seen that 20% of people were affected.

According to the research which was published in the European Respiratory Journal, it was seen that 1590 coronavirus patients with the average age of around 49 were admitted at 57 hospitals during December 2019 and January 2020. The findings conclude that 16% of patients showed severe COVID-19 disease while 8.2% patients ended up with ventilation, intensive care or death i.e. they reached composite endpoints. The lead study author of Guangzhou Medical University Wei-Jie Guan expressed that the death of 50 patients gave us a mortality rate of around 3.1% for hospitalized patients.

It is therefore seen that patients who have the existing condition are at an 80% higher risk of developing COVID-19. The figure ultimately increases if the patients have 2 or more underlying medical conditions, according to the experts. COPD patients had a 170% increased risk to suffer from severe illness while the risk for cancer patients is around 250%. When considering the overall situation, it was seen those quarter patients had underlying issue i.e. high blood pressure. The research and studies were unclear that having hypertension would increase your chance to suffer from severe illness by a coronavirus.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT INCREASE YOUR RISK TO SUFFER FROM COVID-19:

Have a look at the chronic conditions which can heighten the risk of suffering from a deadly, infectious disease i.e. COVID-19:

  1. Cancer
  2. Asthma
  3. Cystic fibrosis
  4. Primary immunodeficiency
  5. COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  6. Chronic kidney disease
  7. Chronic liver disease, for example hepatitis
  8. Chronic heart disease, for example, heart failure
  9. Chronic neurological conditions, for example motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), cerebral palsy or a learning disability
  10. HIV and AIDS
  11. Diabetes
  12. Being overweight (a BMI of 40 or above)
  13. Spleen disorders –for example removal of the spleen or suffering from sickle cell anemia

8% of people had more than one condition, some of the diseases overlapped with each other like COPD and diabetes. The findings were not concluded depending on the age instead it showed that how the underlying condition resulted in making people severely ill or led to death. The findings further showed that a quarter of all COPD patients led to death while 30% were admitted within ICU. However, it’s not sure that such figures included the ones who led to death. Researchers also found out that within Italy the deaths were mainly seen in people who had pre-existing medical conditions.

TIMELINE OF COVID-19 SYMPTOMS:

Scientists have further mentioned a timeline for the coronavirus symptoms which includes:

  • Fever, muscle pain, fatigue and dry cough on day 1
  • Breathing difficulties on day 2
  • Troubles during breathing on day 7 and admitted to hospitals
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome on day 8
  • Admitted to the intensive care unit on day 10
  • Fever ends on day 12
  • Shortness of breath ultimately stops during day 13
  • Deaths experienced in patients who were worse affected on day 18-19
  • Illness finishes on day 22

A study was conducted by Italian health workers on 335 deaths where it was seen that three deaths occurred in healthy patients while rest were already suffering from2 or more pre-existing medical conditions. According to the study published by Italy’s National Institute of Health, the three common problems include diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Scientists are still trying to figure out why people with increased blood pressures are susceptible to suffer from COVID-19.

According to the US center for disease control and prevention, they need more data to be available to conduct proper investigating regarding the association of high blood pressure with coronavirus. The latest study by China also revealed that illnesses such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease had a 79-80% higher rate to admit within the intensive care unit, being put on a ventilator and die due to coronavirus. It is because of the weak immune system that the bodies are unable to fight against viral infections.
