Lung Cancer Complications

Lung cancer is a severe, debilitating condition that can have a negative impact on the entire body directly. The treatment for lung cancer can also result in serious complications that can affect the vital organs of the body. Lung cancer has a tendency to spread to different body organs by a process known as metastasis. It commonly spreads to bones, brain, liver, adrenal glands or others. The symptoms associated with lung cancer complications include:

Severe pain can occur near the chest or surrounding the lungs. The advanced pain results in a slight discomfort for a moderate period but it becomes persistent with time.

Lung cancer can result in blockage of the airways which can result in breathing difficulties. Sometimes the shortness of breath occurs due to pleural effusion which is the buildup of fluid within the lungs as it becomes difficult for the lungs to expand easily. Lung cancer can also stimulate mucous production which can block the airway making it difficult for the patient to breath. Sometimes bleeding might occur in the airways leading to blood in the cough. Lung cancer can also result in the formation of large tumors that compresses the lungs, leading to reduced lung functions and ultimately causing pneumonia.

Lung cancer can sometimes affect the adjacent nerves which can result in nerve pain/ neuropathy. Neuropathy leads to tingling, weakness or numbness within the surrounding areas. Sometimes the lung cancer can involve the nerves within the face area or neck leading to Horner’s syndrome which is characterized by a small pupil, drooping lids, no sweating over the affected side. Other than that if the neck nerves are involved it can result in Pancoast’s syndrome where you suffer from numbness, weakness or pain within the hands or arms. Sometimes the lung cancer spreads to the nerves within the voice box where it results in voice changes and hoarseness.

Lung cancer can severely affect the heart along with the major vessels. When it occurs, these arteries or veins get blocked resulting in chest swelling, neck swelling or swelling over the face. These issues result in dizziness, headaches, and fatigue or vision issues. Lung cancer tumors affecting the heart can lead to abnormal heart rhythms or fluid buildup.

Lung cancer can spread to the esophagus where it results in swallowing difficulties. Some individuals experience a painful sensation during drinking or eating. Radiotherapy for lung cancer can also result in such painful symptoms.

Other complications that might occur due to lung cancer include hypercalcemia where the body starts retaining an excess amount of calcium. Lung cancer can also result in weak bone as the metastasis of lung cancer causes the bone to fracture. Lung cancer can result in excess water retention where it leads to less retention of Sodium i.e. hyponatremia in the body. Lung cancer leads to overwhelming exhaustion to the patients as it spreads throughout the body.

Complications occurring due to lung cancer usually occur due to the slow progression of the disease or due to the treatment protocol. It is essential to identify the signs and symptoms as soon as possible when these complications occur to have early intervention. The chance of survival for lung cancer patients is usually low as the disease is commonly diagnosed at the later stages. However, if the cancer is identified at the early stage then there is an increased rate of survival.
