Monaco is a small city-state on the French Riviera in Western Europe. Monaco is famous for its casino in Monte Carlo. Monaco (city-sate) is its capital, and Monte Carlo is its largest quarter. 

1.World’s Second Smallest Country

After the Vatican-city state, Monaco stands second on the list of the World’s smallest countries. Its total area is precisely 0.85 square miles. The fun fact about its smallness is that you can walk across the width of the entire country in less than an hour. In the past, Monaco used to be even smaller. It is with the time that it expanded by reclaiming land from the Mediterranean Sea. Back in 2005, it had an area of just 0.762 square miles.

2.World’s Highest Population Density per Square Mile

The total population of Monaco is approximately 40,000 which does not seem too much. But for a country whose total area is below one square per mile, it is like a whole lot of people. There’s no other country in the entire World with this density of population. However, many cities in the world have an area above one square mile and a population of over 50, 000 is residing per mile. So, Monaco is probably not the most crowded region you’ll ever see.

3. The Country has No Lake or River

Monaco is one of the 18 countries in the entire world that does not possess even a single lake or river within its territory. But it does lie next to the Mediterranean Sea, forming the shortest coastline ever. France borders three of its sides while one side is exposed to the Mediterranean Sea forming a coastline of just 2.38 miles. There are more than 40 countries in the world that don’t have a piece of land connected to a sea or an ocean.

4. its Natives are a Minority in Their Own Country

A fun fact about Monaco is that its natives, known as the Monegasques, are a minority in their very own land. They represent only 21.6 percent of the total population. The French are the majority in their country, making up 28.4 percent of the total population. The Italians make up the third-largest community, representing 18.7 percent of the total. Other notable minorities include Brits, Belgians, Germans, Swiss, and Americans.

5. Nearly 30 percent of its Population are Millionaires

Monaco is a tax-free country. You don’t have to pay any income taxes, and business taxes are too low to bother you anyway. Hence, plenty of rich and millionaire people have made their way to this tax-free land to save their money. As a result, they make up 32.1 percent of the country’s population today. It is way more than the percentage of millionaires in any other country in the World.

6.Tops the List of Countries with ‘Highest Life Expectancy’

According to the CIA World Factbook, the country recorded with the highest life expectancy is also Monaco. The life expectancy in this Western European country is 89.4 years, whereas in the East Asian country is 85.3 years. No other country in the world matches this figure, and people tend to live less long there.

7. It has the Third Smallest Military in the World

The country’s militancy is the third-smallest in the World, consisting of merely 255 soldiers. Another fun fact about the country is that it has the second-highest number of policemen per capita. On top of that, the state does not even have an air force or a navy of its own.
